Berwick - Borders Badminton League Winners 2014 - 2015

Normal service has been resumed with Berwick winning 4 out of 5 matches to win the league this season. Regretfully, due to admin error by Earlston H.S. the final round of matches could not be played on the fixture date and had to be abandoned this season as a suitable date to play the last round could not be agreed by all the teams. Once again it has been a struggle for the teams to find enough competitive players this season but thankfully no matches had to be cancelled due to a lack of numbers. Congratulations to Berwick on winning the league title and to everyone who participated in the Borders Badminton League this season.

U12 Anglo-Scottish Invitational Tournament - 2015

Junior badminton players from the Borders had another successful tournament when the U12 team travelled to Ashington on Saturday, 31st January, 2015 to play in the annual Anglo-Scottish Invitational Tournament.

Over two days of competition, the Borders played teams from five other regions in Scotland and England. The young Borders team played brilliantly throughout the weekend, winning three out of the five matches, and ended the tournament in third place overall. At one stage it looked as though the Borders team may end the tournament as runners up to Yorkshire. The first match against Lothian was very close and the Borders had to win the last three rubbers to secure the win. Despite some heroics on court, the Borders only won two of the last three rubbers and Lothian pulled off a narrow 8-7 victory.

Next up was the tournament winners, Yorkshire. Although the young Borderers played well, winning three out of four tie breaks, Yorkshire won the match 9-6.

Following these early set-backs, the team needed to end the first day of competition with a match to raise spirits and boost confidence levels. The Borders bounced back immediately with a good 9-6 win over Lanarkshire.

Day 2 could not have gone any better with an emphatic 15-0 win over Cumbria and 13-2 win over the host region, Northumberland.

Team managers would like to congratulate the players on their level of commitment and sterling efforts over the two days of competition.

The young Borders team played brilliantly throughout the weekend, winning 6 out of the 7 matches, and ended the tournament as runners up to Lothian. Third place went to Cheshire/Derbyshire.

Despite a poor start to the tournament on day 1, losing the first match with Lothian 12-3, the Borders bounced back immediately with a good 10-5 win over Lanarkshire and a strong 12-3 victory over Yorkshire ‘B’. With players confidence levels now raised, the Borders rounded off the first day with some superb badminton and a good, solid 11-4 win against Northumberland.

Day 2 began well with the Borders securing a good 10-5 win over Yorkshire ‘A’. The penultimate match against the combined team of Cheshire/Derbyshire proved to be the closest match of the whole weekend and a nervous time for team managers and parents. Drawing on the confidence that the players had gained from earlier matches, the Borders won 3 out of 5 tie breaks and narrowly scraped through with an 8-7 victory. The final match was against Cumbria and this match ended with an emphatic 14-1 win, the best result of the tournament. The team managers would like to congratulate the players on their sterling efforts over the 2 days of competition.
