Scottish National Junior Championships - 2016

A large contingent of Borders children recently travelled to Motherwell to compete in the 2016 Scottish National Junior Badminton Championship. In the Under 13's the Borders were well represented by Finlay Rhind(Duns),Lewis Learmonth (Duns),Calum Stokes (Duns),Tyler Smith (Greenlaw),Isaac Weir (Duns),Jessica Mitchell ( Peebles) and Jodie Black (Eyemouth). Competing in the under 17's event was Eugene Stokes (Duns), Calum Smith (Greenlaw) and Robbie Patterson (Eyemouth)

Robbie Patterson won the under 17's Scottish National Mixed doubles title with partner Ciara Torrance (Prestwick) with a 21 – 16, 21-19 win over Calum Atterbury (Edinburgh)and Rachel Andrews (Edinburgh). Patterson and Atterbury then joined forces to contested the doubles final against number one seeds Matthew and Christopher Grimley (Glasgow) the match was a high quality, grueling final which saw the Grimley’s coming from behind to defeat Atterbury and Patterson 18-21,21-19,21-12 . Last month Robbie also won the Senior Scottish Schools Championship singles title. When asked Robbie said "The Nationals has been an event I have been preparing for since the start of the year, I am very happy with my mixed title. I know we lost in the final of the doubles but it was a fantastic match and we were very close to getting our first ever win against Matt and Chris. I commit a lot of time and hard work to my badminton, the help and backing I receive from the Borders Athlete Support Programme, Ashaway and Clubsport Berwickshire, is so valuable in helping me develop as a player.”

Eugene Stokes and Calum Smith, playing a year above their age group in the under 17’s, met tough opposition, but gained valuable experience at this tournament. It was great preparation for Smith who will be representing Scotland at under 15’s Home Nations Quadtrangle at the end of the month.

Whilst playing her first match of the day Jodie Black (Eyemouth) sustained an ankle injury, she was able to continue and reached the finals of the mixed doubles with partner Isaac Weir (Duns) and the semi-finals of singles and doubles. However after seeking medical attention on Sunday morning Jodie unfortunately had to withdraw from the tournament.

The semi finals of the boy’s under 13’s level doubles saw three Borders players all battling for a place in the final. Isaac Weir and Hamish McCallister played number 2 seeds Euan Campbell (Dunbar) and Andrew Evans, Weir and McCallister were defeated 15-21, 16-21. Callum Stokes(Duns) with his partner Lewis Hart (Motherwell) found themselves up against number one seeds Ian Campbell and Tyler Smith (Greenlaw) this game went all the way to 3 sets with Stokes and Hart winning 21-18, 16-21,19-21. The partnership of Stokes and Hart then took on number 2 seeds Campbell and Evans the final produced an epic battle to the end seeing Campbell and Evans winning 15-21, 21-17 19-21.

The results at this National Championship shows that The Borders are certainly producing some very committed and talented young Badminton players for the future.

Lothian U13 Inter-County Tournament - 2016

The Borders U13 team travelled to Meadowmill Sports Centre, Tranent on Sunday, 27th March, 2016 to play in the Lothian U13 Inter-County Tournament. Results: Borders 4 Isle of Man 6; Borders 0 Lothian A 10; Borders 2 Yorkshire 8; Borders 1 Lothian B 9; Borders 2 North East 8. Some tough matches for the young Borders team but a good experience for them, particulary for the newer members of the squad this season. They didn't win any of the matches but they competed well, kept fighting for every point and there was some great badminton played with quite a few games being lost by the odd point or two. Lothian A won the tournament with Yorkshire runners up and North East in third place.

Duns BC - Borders Badminton League Winners 2015 - 2016

Duns BC are the league winners for season 2015 - 2016, going through the season undefeated. Runners up Hawick had to win the final match against Duns 6-3 to win the league but Duns proved to be too strong on the last day of the season and won the league decider 5-4. Once again it has been a struggle for the teams to find enough competitive players this season and regretfully Berwick had to concede their first match of the season to Hawick due to a lack of numbers. Thankfully all the remaining fixtures were completed. Congratulations to Duns BC on winning the league title and to everyone who participated in the Borders Badminton League this season.

Kelso Open Primary School Championships - 17th January, 2016

The future of badminton in the region is looking good if the turnout at the recent Kelso Open Primary School Championships is anything to go by. Having had to postpone the event in December, due to adverse weather conditions, organisers were slightly concerned that entrants might not make the new date. But fears were allayed when players from across the region turned up en masse for the first tournament of 2016.

The Girls competition got underway first with the top three seeds Jessica Mitchell (Kingsland), Tilly Lucas (Coldingham) and Lucy Bell (Edenside) making it through to the Semi-final knock outs together with Chloe Blackie from Drumlanrig. After some tough ties the Borders squad players made it to the final with Jessica beating Tilly 21-7. The pair then went onto partner each other and win the Doubles competition which was ran as a Round Robin. Chloe Blackie and Sophie Skeet (Jedburgh) were runners-up.

Umpires and coaches decided that Poppie Gibson from Stirches Primary School should receive the ‘Best Girl’ trophy for the enthusiasm, promise and attitude shown throughout the competition.

The boys competition was much busier with 33 entrants from all over the Borders competing in nine round robin groups.

Pool winners were: Duncan Crowe (Coldingham); Keiran Burns (Duns); Finlay Rhind (Duns); Liam Hunter (West Linton); Matthew Domingo (Jedburgh); Charlie Worrell (Coldingham); Daniel Ritchie (Duns); Ben Stewart (Edenside); Finaly McLean (Edenside).

In the end in a very hotly contested final Keiran Burns managed to overcome the might of Duncan Crowe, 22-20, 21-19.

The B Consolation tournament was won by Archie Langley (Chirnside) who beat Dylan Mann (St Boswells). Dylan also impressed the coaches and umpires with his grit, determination, fair play and lovely positive attitude to win the ‘Best Boy’ Trophy.

In the doubles final Finaly Rhind and Duncan Crowe met Keiran Burns with Charlie Worrell with the former pair victorious.

Organiser Lynn Young would like to thank all the parents who donated raffle prizes and cakes and for helping on the coffee stall which made £80.70p. Also raffle ticket sellers Sophie, Chloe, Poppy and Georgie who helped to raise over £60 for the club; Aiden Lee, Sophie Younger and Craig Younger from Kelso High School badminton club for umpiring for the whole day; Border Badminton group coaches ‑ Pete Hardie and Dave Burns (Duns), Alys Rodwell (West Linton) and Nancy Morrison (Stirches) as well as Judith Younger, Brian Young, Andrew McLean and Linsey Young on technical the table and of course the fantastic janitor Gordon.

“A huge occasion for the small Kelso Junior Club but well worth all the effort and hard work,” she added. The next competition is the Borders Secondary Schools Tournament on Sunday, January 31. With the Primary Schools event on Saturday, February 20.

U16 Anglo-Scottish Invitational Tournament - September, 2015

The U16 Borders Badminton team travelled to Tyneside Badminton Centre, Newcastle on Saturday, 5th September, 2015 to participate in the Anglo-Scottish Invitational Tournament. During the 2 days of competition the Borders played teams from 7 other regions from Scotland and England. Having one over age player and a girl short meant that it was always going to be an uphill struggle to win any matches. Despite this handicap the young Borders team played brilliantly throughout the weekend and ended the tournament in 8th place. Lothian won the tournament with Yorkshire runners up and Cheshire in third place. Dave Burns & Harry Turnbull would like to thank Jennifer MacDonald & Lynn Rhind for their help and support at this event. It was very much appreciated. Well done to all the players for all their hard work and effort over the two days of competition. Their behaviour both on and off court was superb and a joy for the coaches and team managers to work with throughout the tournament. Well done to all the players.

RP Adam LTD - Main Sponsor of BBG

Borders Badminton Group is pleased to announce that a main sponsor has agreed to help the Group with the cost of the hall hire at Earlston High School. RP Adam Ltd, a company based in Selkirk that specialises in the manufacture of cleaning and disinfection chemical products for the leisure, hospitality and health sectors, will generously donate £500.00 per annum for the next three years. This is great news for the Group as VAT is to be added to the hall costs for the first time due to a new policy introduced by Scottish Borders Council. This donation will take quite a strain off the Group's finances and the Group would like to thank RP Adam Ltd very much for their donation and support.
