Home Nations Quadrangular - 2017

Scotland's young players added to their second place in the team event at the Junior Quadrangular in Dublin with three titles in the individual events.

Michael Maguire defeated Neil Bhabuta to win the boys' singles 21-17 14-21 21-15. His win avenged team-mate Callum Smith's 21-15 21-14 defeat by the England player in the semi-finals and Kenneth Cheung's 21-16 21-7 exit in the quarters.

Maguire had come through a tough semi-final with a 22-24 21-11 21-8 win over England's Alex Green.

And Smith claimed a second title in the mixed doubles when he and Alice Campbell defeated England's Joseph Ball and Lisa Curtin 17-21 21-19 21-17 after coming through an even closer semi-final against Green and Estelle van Leeuwen 17-21 21-18 22-20.

Campbell also reached the semi-final of the girls' singles before losing  21-13 21-14 to England's Gauri Shidhaye, who went on to take the title.

Duns BC - Borders Badminton League Winners 2016 - 2017

Duns BC are the league winners for season 2016 Ė 2017 on games difference. Both Duns & Hawick ended the season on the same number of points with each team winning four matches but Duns finished with the superior games difference of 21 against a games difference of 13 for Hawick. Duns proved to be too strong on the last day of the season and won the league decider 7-2. The match between Berwick and Jedburgh ended with a 9-0 win to Berwick. Once again it has been a struggle for the teams to find enough competitive players this season and regretfully the first round of matches had to be cancelled due to a lack of numbers. Thankfully all the remaining fixtures were completed. Congratulations to Duns BC on winning the league title and to everyone who participated in the Borders Badminton League this season.

Borders Secondary School Championships - 2017

The annual Borders Secondary School Championships was held at Berwickshire High School, Duns on Sunday, 29th January, 2017. Berwickshire High School took six of the twelve titles available, Eyemouth High School took three titles, Peebles High School took two titles and Earlston High School took the last remaining title.

With 60 entries from eight of the regionís nine secondary schools it was always going to be a busy day of competition. The event began at 9.30am with the singles tournaments before moving on to the level doubles by lunch time and final matches being played late afternoon with a 5pm finish.

The day was a huge success and the standard of badminton from these fine, young players was, at times, simply breathtaking. All the final matches were keenly contested with several close games. The committee, parents and helpers rallied round doing teas/coffees and cakes, selling raffle tickets, scoring games, and running the competition from the Technical table. Committee members are working hard to ensure that badminton continues to be promoted throughout the whole of the Scottish Borders for the years to come. Large tournaments such as this takes a lot of organising behind the scenes and people probably donít realise how much work goes into an event like this, which is all done on a voluntary basis.

Christine Wylie, the groups chair person thanked tournament sponsors RP Adam and Harry Turnbull Ltd for their support this season together with everyone who helped on the day to make the event run smoothly. Christine gave special thanks to Dave Burns, the groups coaching convenor, for all his hard work and late nights on preparing the pools to ensure that the championships ran smoothly on the day.
